What is the FTA?

  • Who we are

  • New Zealand was the first developed Western country to sign a free trade agreement with China and the first Western developed country to recognize China's economic market position. New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement was established in April 2008 Officially signed on 07 July under the witness of the prime ministers of the two governments, the free trade between the two countries has fully realized zero tariffs on trade after 8 years of running-in and tempering, and free trade has achieved true "trade freedom".

  • Incorporated with the New Zealand National Government on 16 June 2008, the New Zealand China Free Trade Association (NZFTA) is headquartered in Auckland, New Zealand, and currently has 423 member companies and a representative office in Shanghai, China.

  • What we do
All major decisions are made by the FTA members' governments: either by ministers (who usually meet at least every two years) or by their ambassadors or delegates (who meet regularly in Geneva).

  • What we stand for
A number of simple, fundamental principles form the foundation of the multilateral trading system.

  • Overview
The primary purpose of the FTA is to open trade for the benefit of all.

Decision-making

  • Organization chart
The FTA's top decision-making body is the Ministerial Conference. followed by the General Council and various other councils and committees.

Membership

  • Members and observers
The FTA has over 530 members representing 98 per cent of trade.
To join the FTA, a government has to bring its economic and trade policies in line with FTA rules and negotiate its terms of entry with the FTA membership.

FTA Secretariat

Budget
